Chapter eighteen

Sermon

Ana had been standing by the window of her bedroom, watching everyone leave and thinking.

Hana had just left with Jerry to go fetch some Followers. Fetch because she was a bitch, and dogs fetched. She got into one of the cruisers with Jerry, laughing and flirting, and they’d left about fifteen minutes ago.

Hadiza, Sade, Fany, Mrs. Thomas… and everyone else was getting into a black bus that looked like beefed up Hertz. It was a party bus, Ana knew because Adeleke showed Ana pictures of the interior as she booked it. She’d been happy about it for days. They were going to Shannon’s birthday.

The ballroom at the Roosevelt, guest rooms and guest houses at Maison de la Luz, party bus and limo service, three day trip for everyone—all expenses paid, including added in allowances for the French Quarter. Sasuke was spending “fuck you money” on Shannon’s birthday.

“Are you coming, Ana?”

Ana turned and saw Adeleke at her door. She was dressed ready for the party bus and was pulling a small suitcase behind her.

“I’m going to wait for Drake, and catch up with you guys later.”

“Are you sure, girl?” asked Adeleke. “You look like you could use a ride in the party bus.”

“I’m sure, Adeleke, thank you though.”

“All right,” said Adeleke. “Do you need anything before I leave?”

“I’m good.”

“Suit yourself.”

“Oh, hey,” Ana said. “Who’s here? Left at the plantation, I mean.”

“Giselle’s making a cake in the kitchen,” said Adeleke. “She’s been making cupcakes, cookies, all sorts of pastries all day. Master Sasuke’s with her. I offered to stay behind to service the meeting, but he said to go ahead and leave with the girls. He calls us girls, the man be pleasant that way.”

Adeleke swayed her hips and looked giddy when she said, girls. Everyone liked Sasuke, and he was "pleasant that way". Unless he wanted something from you, then he became a demanding, disapproving, impatient, stubborn, and frigid old man impossible to deal with.

Ana and Adeleke waved bye to each other, and Ana saw the party bus leave as she still stood by the window. Arms crossed at the chest, tapping her feet, and probably frowning as well, Ana was trying to decide.

Should I approach Sasuke or not?

Drake had asked her to wait, but if Giselle was back it meant he’d be gone a while. Then there would be council, then birthday, then Sasuke would just leave after that.

She’d asked for Drake to be there only because Sasuke had frightened her but the feeling had passed since. It was just Sasuke. He did look kind of tired, and everyone’s fuse was short when they were tired. That was Ana’s point though, he was like everyone else and not a pope or infallible.

He seemed to be in a shit mood, but Ana didn’t understand why. It was Shannon’s birthday, he was on a break vacationing with his wife to France. Why was his mood so crappy? Well, the darkness being in the realm, of course. But that had been happening for a while, so if his mood had crapped over that, it wasn’t going to improve anytime soon.
